Birds In Flight

you know, there are all these things that we

propose
push forward
intend
decide to do

and then there are all the things that just happen to us,

are seemingly providential gifts
or uninivited disasters.

somehow a person just arrives
or an event unfolds.
some thief steals your bag.

on the street, someone smiles
and says hello.

we like to think that we know where we are going,
and what is going to happen to us.

how do you suppose the birds make their decisions,

find their way
cooperate
reach a common goal, and
enjoy their destinations.

just fab g

how the birds know to make that shape ... how they know where they are headed, who leads, who follows ... it has all amazed me my whole life (and I hope it always does).

I love the sentiment of this piece. I've book marked it to return to - sometimes I can be a little prone to thinking I can take the reigns, and this is a great reminder that most of the best things in my life are accident/co-incidence/the universe making connections, call it what you will ...

thanks!

Nice symmetry, depth, and lighting. The form of the flight pattern makes a pattern of a bird's head with the small group as the eye, looking over the whole big picture.
Yes, what Stray says seems to be true. We have to work with the universal accidents or connections. And you alllude to this in your words, g.

In all of life there is a knowing. We all have it; only we humans question it. Let what happens happen and be one with it. Learn from the knowing and use the knowing to make the journey we all are on more exciting. G you have stired(once more) some very interesting thoughts. Thank you

I think we humans have instincts like the animal world does, too, we just override them, or let society or family or other things influence us. I think it's when we can really be true to ourselves that life flows most easily, like geese in a draft.

Nice photo and thoughts to ponder this week!

something I have always remembered about birds - geese actually is that they care about one another. From what i learnt about them if one is ailing then a couple of others look after the sick one. They swap leaders if the leader gets tired. Amazing simply amazing. We could learn alot form them

A 'winter is coming' scene in the heat of the summer. For me it is a picture of hope. Nice.

thanks for stopping in, FTS. i know you are busy with the responsibilities of teaching.

Mrs D, the birds surely seem to know where they are going. you see them in the air buffetted by the winds, and the formations break apart and regroup as many of the birds take short cuts.

if you imagine being in the sky, why they must see a wonderful landscape unfolding as they fly,

and i would guess they are ~remembering~ places they have seen before. rivers. fields. highways. all the human landmarks. it might not be that difficult, and they may even be rejoicing as they get closer to home.

Jen, God does have a plan for each of us, right?

Stray, i never know how much of what i am seeing is a call for action, or a reminder to be observant and to be ready for the gifts.

Presence, when you put a picture out over the wires, it comes down to being viewed on many different screens, with much variety. i'm not sure how it looks on your screen, but when i stare at the image i can see faint brown hues in the sky above the birds.

Dave, the knowing. let what happens, happen. isn't that hard, at times, for people who are so used to directing the show, believing they are writing the words and choreographing the action.

abby, life does seem to flow "most easily" at times and then at other times "less easily" and i'm not sure it is possible to have one without the other. and i know what you mean about family pressures and ~society~ and the way those things can push us off center, but i always wondered how i can be true to myself, when the ~myself~ who shows up, seems to be changing all the time.

jen, i remember stumbling, in pennsylvania, in the middle of the summer, upon a goose on her nest, and wondering how many others had paused with her, for i do think they care for each other.

kent, around here the birds fly through in the fall and in the spring, although there seems to be a wide window in both seasons. i mean some birds start earlier, and others lag behind. some days, it's groups of thirty to fifty birds coming through at thirty minute intervals, as if there were an officer in charge of the day's staggered start. it ~is~ a hopeful sight. i am always thrilled.

Thanks for the kind words, Karen.

deb, I appreciate those who stop by and leave their mark. you have already reminded me to sing, and i truly appreciate that.

Oooo, I don't want winter to come! That's what birds migrating make me think of. I feel sorry for the birds out of formation, they have to work hard to catch up ...
